The
green revolution brought about significant
changes to wet rice cultivation in the mid-1960s. Modern irrigation techniques, high yielding varieties,
chemical pesticides and fertilizers were introduced to improve wet rice
yields. The aim was to reduce food shortage for a growing population.
However not all farmers welcome the green
revolution as there are potential problems too.
Suppose
your family owns a rice farm. The local agriculture authorities have
approached you with plans to help you "modernize"
your farm and the way you plant rice. Hold a family meeting to decide on
your best course of action. Each family member has a role to play
and the head of the household will make a decision based on this
discussion.
Present
your decision in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, with supporting
arguments and counter-arguments as to why you would or wouldn't adopt
these "modern" practices.
